4WD Vehicle

Our 4WD Tour Vehicle & Set Up

For our Lake Eyre Private Tour we operate the Turbo Charged Toyota Land Cruiser GXL which is Toyota’s luxury 4WD.

This vehicle seats 4 adults plus the guide very comfortably and can carry a further 2 or in the rear (suitable for children and small adults).

Regular stops and seat rotation results in a comfortable ride for all.

Depending on the group size, gear is carried in a trailer or on the roof.

Accommodation & Wild Camps on our Lake Eyre Tour

Our Exclussive Wild Camp on the Edge of lake Eyre – Simply stunning

Ever since we started operations way back in 1989, we have specialised in Wild Camping. On this tour we have a mixture of Wild Camping and accommodation.

If you prefer we can access accommodation on all nights of the tour, and are happy to quote this for you based on what is available, however we recommend giving the Wild Camping a go, even if you have never camped. It’s an exhilarating experience and we know how to do it safely and comfortably.

Our most common feedback from all the tours we run is that the highlights often include the Wild Camping Experience, especially if the stars are out and the Milky Way is on show.

You may only go to Lake Eyre and Outback SA once, so you might as well do it properly!

The Standard Lake Eyre Tour includes;

  • Night 1: Wild Camp in the Flinders Ranges
  • Night 1: Wild Camp in the Flinders Ranges
  • Night 1: Wild Camp on Station Country Near Lake Eyre
  • Night 4: Hotel Accommodation at the iconic William Creek Hotel

As discussed, some or all of the Wild camps can be upgraded to Hotel accommodation, please get in contact if this is what you prefer.

Lake Eyre Flights

We work together with Wrights Air at William Creek and include a 2 hour flight of Lake Eyre as part of the tour

You can read more about this flight here: https://www.wrightsair.com.au/our-flights/william-creek-flights/2-hour-lake-eyre-flight/

Lake Eyre Flight Upgrade

It is possible to upgrade your Lake Eyre flight to a private charter which takes you from William Creek, over Lake Eyre and the Flinders Ranges and lands at Wilpena in the Flinders Ranges. The cost of this depends on the size of your group, so we’ll need to quote it each time, however it normally adds about $500 per person to the total cost.

One of the advantages of this route is that you cut down on the driving required & avoid driving over the same territory twice.

Lake Eyre Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Adelaide to The Flinders Ranges

We pick you up from your Adelaide accommodation at approximately 8am and immediately begin heading north on our epic adventure.

Before we get too dusty we’ll stop off in the Clare Valley Wine region, one of Australia’s best, scenically spectacular with rolling hill, vines and historic stone building you will not be disappointed by one of South Australia’s best kept secrets.

We stop in at Sevenhill Cellars, the oldest winery in Clare where we’ll hop into their premium wine tasting.

From Clare we keep moving north the the Southern Flinders Ranges town of Melrose, nestled at the base of Mount Remarkable is another Mid North Gem, and onto Hawker & Brachina Gorge in the Flinders Ranges where we will crank up the campfire and Wild Camp under the stars on the edge of the pound.

  • Meals: LD*
  • Accommodation: Wild Camp Flinders Ranges

* We provide a picnic lunch however there is time to stop for a pub lunch in Melrose (at your own cost) if you prefer.

Day 2 – The Flinders Ranges to Lake Eyre

Today we start with another walk and then leave the ranges behind, as we drive out onto the plains with mountains in the rear view mirror and stunning plains in front of us, it’s not hard to imagine the giant Lake Eyre, the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, just the horizon.

Well it’s a bit further than that so to keep up our strength we’ll stop in at the Prairie Hotel at Parachilna, another outback gem, for a yummy pub lunch (lunch at cost)

From Brachina Gorge we pass Parachilna & Copley (Coffee and Quandong Pies) on our northerly trek to Marree, the start of the Oodnadatta Track, by now the bitumen road has turned to dirt, the fences on the sides of the road have disappeared, so have the power lines and phone towers and most other signs of civilisation, it’s a very refreshing feeling.

We push along the Oodnadatta track to our exclussive Wild Camp right on the edge of Lake Eyre, this spot is very special and will allow us to fully appreciate tis amazing wilderness location. This will be your favourite camp!

  • Meals:BLD
  • Accommodation: Wild Camp On the Edge of Lake Eyre

Day 3 – Lake Eyre Flight & William Creek

Today we have the opportunity to see Lake Eyre from the air, we’ll join a 2 hour scenic flight over the Lake which tracks to the Southern End of Lake Eyre & Belt Bay, then heads  for Silcrete Island and up the Western shoreline of the Babbage Peninsula via Dalhunty Island, Follows the Warburton Groove to the north to explore the Warburton River inlet and channel country before returning via the Neales River Inlet.

In the afternoon we’ll head back along the Oodnadatta Track towards Marree where we’ll stop and see the Bubler and Blanch cup Mound Springs.

Tonight our camp, the final for the trip, is again in a remote spot under the stars around the campfire

  • Meals: BLD
  • Accommodation: Wild Camp On Station Country

Day 5 – Wild Camp to Adelaide

Today is pretty much a driving day, we’ll get up early and make our way back toward Adelaide via the town of Womera and Port Augusta, with the aim of getting you back your Adelaide accommodation before 5pm

Meals: BL
