Your outback journey begins before dawn, slipping out of the city while most people are still fast asleep. After grabbing a much-needed coffee on the way out of Adelaide, we head north toward the quiet little town of Wirrabara. Here, vibrant silo art brings life to the main street, and Julie’s Bakery dishes up the kind of hearty country fare you didn’t realize you were craving.

From there, it’s on to Arkaroo Rock, set deep within Adnyamathanha Country. This isn’t just a bushwalk—it’s a step back through time. The 3.2 km loop winds through native vegetation to a rock shelter decorated with ochre and charcoal paintings that date back over 5,000 years. These ancient artworks tell the tale of Akurra, the great serpent whose movements shaped the land itself. It’s powerful, sacred, and truly unforgettable.

As the sun lowers and the ranges glow with the last light of day, we reach Wilpena Pound, our overnight stop. A local Yura guide welcomes us to Country, sharing stories first in Yura Ngawarla, then retelling them in English. More than just a formal greeting, it’s an invitation to connect with the land and its enduring custodians.

The day winds down back at camp with dinner under the open sky. Then it’s time to unroll your swag and drift off beneath a canopy of stars, with the Milky Way shining as your ceiling.

After breakfast, lace up your boots for the Wangara Lookout Hike. Beginning at the Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre, this 7 km return trail winds through the shady Pound Gap, where towering river red gums line the path and emus or kangaroos might wander into view. The first stop is the historic Hills Homestead—a perfect place to rest before tackling the short, steep climb to the lookout. For those who push on to the upper platform, the sweeping views are nothing short of breathtaking.

Once back on flat terrain, we visit Old Wilpena Station, a place where the stories of early pastoral life intertwine with the deep heritage of the Adnyamathanha people. Then it’s back on the bus and off to Hawker for lunch and a quick wander through the Jeff Morgan Gallery—a fascinating blend of art and history.

Our next adventure unfolds at Warren Gorge, where a 5.2 km trail showcases rugged orange cliffs, clusters of cypress pines, and, with a bit of luck, sightings of the elusive yellow-footed rock-wallaby bounding among the rocks.

We’ll make camp at stunning Warren Gorge for dinner, a few yarns around the fire, and an evening under a sky full of stars.

We bid farewell to the Flinders Ranges and venture deep into the heart of the South Australian outback. After a quick pit stop in Port Augusta to refuel and grab a snack, the journey continues north across endless saltbush plains and open country so vast it feels like you’ve landed on another planet.

Halfway along, we pull in at Lake Hart—a dazzling salt lake that stretches white and bright to the horizon. The stillness here is almost eerie, making it the perfect spot to stretch your legs, snap some photos, and soak in the quiet.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Coober Pedy, the world’s underground opal capital. Our first stop is the Old Timers Mine, where you’ll get a hands-on look at opal mining history. Wander through original underground tunnels and homes, learn how opals are formed, and try your hand at “noodling” for leftover gems in the red dust—luck might just be on your side.

Then it’s time to check into your unique accommodation at Radeka Downunder, where cool, cave-like rooms are carved straight into the rock. The evening is yours to explore this one-of-a-kind outback town—think pizza in a cave, underground bars, and a moonlit wander under the desert sky.

Coober Pedy

Strap in—it’s a big day ahead. We travel north through endless stretches of red earth and open sky, passing the famous Dingo Fence (the world’s longest dog barrier) on our way to Kanku–Breakaways Conservation Park. This remarkable Aboriginal heritage area is where the Moon Plains earn their name, with vast, otherworldly landscapes and a stillness so deep it feels alive.

From there, we cross into the Northern Territory, following the mirage-filled horizon toward Watarrka National Park—home to the mighty Kings Canyon. By late afternoon, we arrive at Kings Creek Station, our desert hideaway for the evening.

Take a dip in the pool, wander along the dusty red trails, or relax with a drink as the outback glows gold during sunset. Dinner’s served at the Station’s easy-going restaurant before turning in for a well-deserved rest beneath a sky bursting with stars.

King’s Canyon

It’s an early rise today, but it’s absolutely worth it. The Kings Canyon Rim Walk is nothing short of iconic—a 6 km circuit showcasing towering sandstone walls, ancient rock formations, and jaw-dropping views in every direction. The trail climbs through Priscilla’s Crack (yes, Frock on a Rock!), winds through the beehive-like domes of the Lost City, and drops into the lush oasis of the Garden of Eden, where ferns and hidden waterholes thrive among the red rock.

After lunch, we hit the road again, heading deeper into the Red Centre. Sit back and let your legs rest while the landscape transforms outside your window—rolling dunes, open desert, and endless horizons. By late afternoon, we reach the beating heart of Australia: Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park.

As the sun sinks, pull up a camp chair and watch Uluru blaze with colour while the desert settles into stillness. Afterwards, we return to camp for dinner and another night beneath a sky thick with stars. Red dust, quiet air, and the Milky Way overhead—this is the outback at its most unforgettable.

This morning, we venture into the sacred domes of Kata Tjuṯa for the Walpa Gorge Walk. The 2.6 km trail threads between towering red rock walls, offering a serene escape into the ancient desert. “Walpa,” the local word for “wind,” shelters a cool, shaded enclave amid the heat, home to rare plants, seasonal watercourses, and stories that stretch back millennia. As this is a sacred men’s site for the Aṉangu people, we move through it with respect and awe.

Before lunch, we deepen our connection to this land with a visit to the Cultural Centre, the heart of the park. Here, you’ll discover more about Aṉangu culture and the significance of this extraordinary landscape.

The afternoon is free to enjoy as you wish. Take a refreshing dip in the pool, explore the Gallery of Central Australia, or join one of the complimentary cultural activities—bush food tastings, didgeridoo demonstrations, guided garden walks, or meeting locals at the Camel Farm.

In the evening, celebrate the end of our Red Centre journey the Aussie way with an Outback BBQ (own cost). Fill your plate, raise a drink with the crew, and swap favourite stories as the desert sky lights up above.

Rise early to witness the desert awaken as the sun climbs over Uluru. The changing light is breathtaking—shifting hues, stretching shadows, and a serene stillness that’s uniquely this place.

Next, get up close to this monumental natural wonder. Towering 348 metres and believed to be around 550 million years old, Uluru commands attention. The 10 km guided base walk offers a chance to truly connect with its landscape. Stroll past waterholes, wander through shaded gullies, and explore ancient rock surfaces carved with significance. Pause under Sheoak trees, peek into sacred caves, and listen to the stories that have shaped this land. If a full walk isn’t your style, shorter routes are also available.

By late morning, we return to Desert Gardens Resort in Yulara, marking the official conclusion of this outback adventure.
