  • The 10 Day Outback Tour explores the fascinating outback regions of Southern and Central Australia in a small group of intrepid travellers. Accommodation is bush camping in a swag around the campfire. We use minimal facility campgrounds and bush camps (no facilities). It’s a backpacker tour with plenty of adventure, it will be hot, it will be dusty, it will be unbelievable. The Tour visits Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas, or Mount Olga) and Watarka (Kings Canyon), Coober Pedy and The Flinders Ranges. As well other less well known destinations including Lake Eyre, Finke Gorge, The West Mac Donnell Ranges, Curtin Springs, and of coarse Lake Cadibarrawirracanna.
  • Warning:Please note that we are Heading Bush Adventure Tours, not Heading Bush Comfortable, Predictable or Luxury Tours, travellers should expect adventure, challenges, longer hikes & swims and at times rough 4WD roads. This is not a bus tour.

Tour Itinerary

National parks visited on this tour include Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park, which is a world heritage area, Watarrka National Park, Flinders Ranges National Park, Witjira National Park and Lake Eyre National Park.

Hikes include the Ayers Rock base walk (8km), Valley of the winds walk at Kata Tjuta (6km) and the rim walk at Watarrka (6km), plus a selection of other walks throughout the expedition. There is also time to climb Ayers Rock if you wish.

Aboriginal culture is very strong in Central Australia, the outback tour visits a number of locations where there are opportunities to meet Aboriginal People and experience this culture. We visit the Arabuna Community at Marree(Finke). The tour also visits the Cultural centre in Ayers Rock Kata Tjuta National Park. Your guide will also be able to discuss with you the many aspects of this rich and varied culture, and will be able to show you sacred sites and ancient rock art.

1 – 2.It’s up early with the sun, pick up from your accommodation and then up the track towards the Flinders Ranges. We spend 2 days in the Flinders where there’s heaps of hiking possibilities. It’s one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world and is a place of fantastic and unique beauty, full of wildlife, traces of Aboriginal Culture and amazing views over the Outback where we are heading.

On Day 1, as we do every day of the tour, we’ll take a hike, there are many beautiful areas in the Southern Flinders to do this, Devils Peak, Arkaroo Rock Aboriginal Art Site and Alligator Gorge are some good ones. After our first bush camp under the stars at the base of Wilpena Pound, we spend the whole 2nd day at the pound, giving us time to hike the biggest – St Mary’s Peak, or some of the shorter hikes if preferred. Bush camp that night is in one of the Flinders Gorges in the National Park.

Highlights

  • Southern Flinders Ranges
  • Warrens Gorge
  • Wilpena Pound
  • Wilpena Pound Hike
  • Bunyeroo Valley
  • Brachina Gorge

3 – 5.We leave the ranges behind and head for the Outback, the roads turn to dirt and sky gets bigger, The next 3 days we get really remote as we travel along a network of bush tracks making our way north towards the Northern Territory.

This is an amazing part of the country, very dry and barren but with surprises around every corner, actually there’s more surprises than corners, waterholes and springs for swimming, Lake Eyre, a giant salt lake where we bush camp and hike. William creek, an outback pub which is officially Australia’s smallest town, population 3.

We pass through Anna Creek, a cattle station so big that it’s the same size as Belgium. After a night to remember sleeping underground in Coober Pedy, we bolt up the highway until we get back on the dirt near the northern territory border where we bush camp in the red earth of Central Australia, Uluru is just over the horizon.

Highlights

  • Oodnadatta Track
  • Arabunna Aboriginal Centre
  • Dingo Fence
  • Lake Eyre
  • Coward Springs
  • William Creek Pub
  • Anna Creek Cattle Station
  • Coober Pedy
  • Go Underground in Coober Pedy

6 – 8.We spend 3 days in this magnificent part of the world, so enough time to see it properly and really appreciate the spiritual significance of the place to the local Anangu Aboriginal people.

In this time we’ll visit the cultural centre at Uluru, hike around the base of Uluru and hike the Valley of the Winds at Kata Tjuta (Olgas). This is all caped of with a chill out sunset at Uluru and a chilly sunrise in the cold desert dawn.

Increasing numbers of visitors are learning to see the Uluru through the eyes of the Anangu and are coming away with a much more unique and different experience than a simple climb, this is our aim. We then head for Kings Canyon where after bush camping we hike the rim of Kings Canyon.

Highlights

  • Ayers Rock (Uluru)
  • Ayers Rock Sunset
  • Ayers Rock
  • Ayers Rock Base Walk
  • Cultural Centre
  • Kata Tjuta
  • Valley of the Winds Hike

9.From Kings Canyon there’s 2 ways to get to Alice Springs, up the highway or through the bush and the Finke Gorge, no prizes for guessing which way we go, we 4WD up the oldest river in the world (no paddle required) the Finke, at 200 million years old it’s done it’s share of flowing, so these days it’s a sandy river bed, big cliffs, gum trees and water holes.

It cuts it’s way through the Western Mac Donnell Ranges where we emerge to visit Palm Valley, Ormiston Gorge and Ellery Creek before arriving in Alice Spring where we can wash off the dust and hit the town.

Highlights

  • Finke Gorge
  • Kings Canyon
  • Kings Canyon Rim Walk
  • West Mac Donnell Ranges
