1. Adelaide to The Flinders Ranges
Read More
We pick you up from your Adelaide accommodation in our ultra comfortable 4WD and immediately escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
The “Mid North” region of South Australia is stunning and dotted with small towns full of historical stone buildings, just 1 1/2 hours from Adelaide is the Clare Valley, a beautiful world renowned wine region producing just 2% of the Nations wine crush, yet responsible for 10% of the awards, Riesling is the Valley’s specialty however it also produces exceptional Reds like Shiraz and Cabernet.
From Clare we continue north to a region known as the Southern Flinders Ranges, on Private property around the township of Quorn we’ll engage the 4WD system in the vehicle and head for the ranges, quickly gaining elevation to the highest point in the Southern Flinders accessible by vehicle, the views from this point are stunning and we’ll be able to map out our route northward where The Elder Ranges and Wilpena Pound appear on the distant horizon. This little mountain adventure is not only exhilarating as our professional driver navigates the extreme terrain, but it allows us to really appreciate the ancient ranges, formed over 500 million years ago, where we will be spending the most of the time over the next few days.
From this point it’s only 1 1/2 hours drive to our accommodation, we can choose to get there early and relax, or if you like we can stop off at Warrens Gorge, a hidden gem in the Southern Flinders where there is a great little hike and a very good chance of spotting the rare Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby.
We’ll have a picnic lunch today on route, and the evening meal in the award winning Rawnsley Park Woolshed Restaurant.

We start today with a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound. Early 20th Century Australian Artist Hans Heysen, who’s many stunning watercolours depict the gum trees and the colourful ranges, summed up the region as “the bones of the earth laid bare” and a flight over the ranges illustrates just how accurate he was. The geological story of the Flinders Ranges stretches back 500 million years where life’s earliest multicellular ancestors were deposited on an ocean floor to become fossils, to uplifting of a mountain range to rival today’s Himalayas, and then to many millions of year of erosion which resulted in what we see today. There is no better way to see it in all it’s awesomeness than from the air.
After the flight we’ll have a crack at exploring Wilpena pound from the ground, there are multiple walks / hikes which we can embark on to do this, from short walks or 2km – 3km to full blown hikes of up to 12km.
For those opting for the shorter hikes, we’ll then drive through to Arkaroo Rock, a short walk brings us to a stunning Aboriginal Rock Art gallery.
The afternoon will be spent relaxing at our accommodation before heading out into wilderness once more where we’ll have a traditional camp over cooked meal around the campfire and under the stars, returning to your accommodation at approx 9pm where hopefully, after a big day you’ll sleep like a log.
